Baseball is a sport that has been ongoing for years with a defined culture and great fans! You can’t walk down Sheffield Street in Wrigleyville without seeing Cubs spirit on every corner. The fans are die-hard whether they have or have not been in the World Series in over one hundred years (cough cough) but hey, the spirit and enjoyment of the game is an experience like no other.
Baseball is a game that helps bond children with their parents and their friends in the neighborhood. I can’t tell you how many times growing up that we would get kicked out of the streets in the middle of a game because a car was coming. I was the girl in my family and all of my brother’s friends and him definitely made me feel like the “Smalls” of the group. They traded their cards and knew all the history of every baseball player of their favorite teams. I got my knowledge from good ole’ Hollywood, well the fabricated version, but give me a break, I was seven! Growing up who didn’t like movies such as the Sandlot, Rookie of the Year, Angels in the Outfield, and who could forget the baseball version of Air bud? I practically made my dog go through training camp to learn how to play baseball with me. I can’t say we ever got the ball back in one piece, but it was the effort that counted.
Baseball movies are great, whether inspiring like Rookie of the year and Field of Dreams, or just created to make you laugh like Benchwarmers or Bad News Bears, they all have one thing in common, they create community, like a common umbrella that holds us together. Because baseball has played such a large roll in my life I created a top 10 Baseball movie list. Her are the movies worth seeing, in my humble opinion, and not just once but many times. If you are looking for a fun family night, pop a bag of warm popcorn, grab some blankets and your loved ones and watch one, two, or all of these movies:
Watching movies is a great way to enjoy the atmosphere of a baseball game, but what you don’t see is all the work that goes into preparation. Unlike the movies, it is important to include the preparation part of the day, and believe me, you will be thankful you didn’t!
Baseball season is fun in the summer and the days can get very hot! On the weekends our days were packed with filling our cooler with Capri Sun drinks and snacks, putting on endless amounts of UV sunscreen, and grabbing some chairs and our portable umbrella to take to the fields. When you are little putting on sunscreen was the worst part of the day, but boy am I glad my mom made me stay in those extra five minutes to protect myself. When you are a kid being at the field is such a liberating experience, but for my poor parents sitting and watching, the experience can get pretty sweaty and uncomfortable. Protecting your skin at games and trying to find shade can be pretty brutal.
Portable umbrellas, like JoeShade, has UV blocking fabric and is a great solution for when you need extra sun protection. UV shade protection is key for staying truly protected from the harmful rays of the sun. Staying protected and in the shade can make a world of a difference, not only in preventing painful sun damage, but also by making your outdoor experience much more enjoyable. So don’t strike out and remember to bring a JoeShade portable umbrella to your next ball game!
